If you read my blog, I must insist you turn your speakers all the way up to 11 and rock one of these in your living room. I don't care who's watching.
But you know what, when all is said and done - Cheap Trick will ALWAYS win out as my favorite band.
Share a song from the last album you purchased.
This post should only be read with headphones on and the volume at 11...
The last CD purchase I made was to replace one of the first vinyl album purchases I ever made.
I recall the original purchase very well. I was in the Jamesway department store (like a Target) with my Mom, and I had the album in hand and she asked me in that Mom tone - "are you sure you want to buy that"? - like why on earth would you want to buy that album and it really pissed me off because what - at age 11 I didn't know my own musical tastes? Like I am going to spend my allowance on something I am never going to listen to? How stupid did she think was? Heh, 30+ years later, I still vividly recall the purchase, as well how stupid I thought my Mother was for questioning me...
Right around that time I met my half sister and BFF. She thought I was the squarest thing she'd ever met, but when she saw I had this album, I was suddenly so cool enough... we loved that album so much we wore the grooves in that album down to a slick surface. I can still see us sitting up in my room blasting that thing on my little mono record player, air guitaring our blessed little hearts out.
But wait, in 1980 HBO aired the movie OVER THE EDGE, the movie she and I watched HUNDREDS of times and knew all of the lines by heart, but I digress - one of the main artists on the soundtrack was - that's right - they've been following me around as background sound for most of my life....
To answer the question: About a year ago I was in the "record store" looking for Black Grape and I saw the Cheap Trick name card out of the corner of my eye. I didn't buy Live At Budokan - the original 1979 purchase - I ended up with The Essential Cheap Trick, a compilation of their most popular songs with most of Budokan included. Yes, it is wrong that C'mon C'mon, Lookout, Big Eyes and Goodnight Now aren't on there, yes, ain't that a shame...

The Ooh Child song by the Five Stairsteps is featured in the movie, Over the Edge. However, in the movie the song is performed by Valerie Carter.
My sister and I watched that movie probably about a thousand times on HBO in the early 80s. I can still vividly see us sitting there singing the Ooh child song, when it plays during an emotionally moving scene at the very end of the movie. Just like life. I actually feel her life in this song.
My sister is gone now, but I own this movie, and when I need her, I watch it. Or I listen to the soundtrack, which includes this song by Cheap Trick:
I found a fantastic web site devoted to the Over the Edge movie while searching around this morning, I never thought I'd find anyone who loved this movie more than I do. Funny how I now live very close to Foster City, California, the "inspiring" city for the film!
